Microtubule dynamic instability

چکیده
What are microtubules? One of three types of protein polymer that make up the cellular cytoskeleton, an elaborate array of filaments that are used to establish cell shape, facilitate cell motility, organize organelles and assist with cell division. Microtubules are stiff tubes, about 25 nm in diameter. During interphase, they serve as tracks on which organelles and the nucleus are positioned by molecular motor proteins. During mitosis, microtubules form a structure called the mitotic spindle which physically segregates the chromosomes into the two daughter cells.

The role of dynamic instability in microtubule organization
Microtubules are one of the three major cytoskeletal components in eukaryotic cells. Heterodimers composed of GTP-bound α- and β-tubulin molecules polymerize to form microtubule protofilaments, which associate laterally to form a hollow microtubule. Tubulin has GTPase activity and the GTP molecules associated with β-tubulin molecules are hydrolyzed shortly after being incorporated into the poly...

متن کاملContributions of Microtubule Dynamic Instability and Rotational Diffusion to Kinetochore Capture.
Microtubule dynamic instability allows search and capture of kinetochores during spindle formation, an important process for accurate chromosome segregation during cell division. Recent work has found that microtubule rotational diffusion about minus-end attachment points contributes to kinetochore capture in fission yeast, but the relative contributions of dynamic instability and rotational di...
متن کاملXMAP215: a key component of the dynamic microtubule cytoskeleton.
Microtubules are essential for various cellular processes including cell division and intracellular organization. Their function depends on their ability to rearrange their distribution at different times and places. Microtubules are dynamic polymers and their behaviour is described as dynamic instability. Rearrangement of the microtubule cytoskeleton is made possible by proteins that modulate ...
متن کاملIrc15 Is a Microtubule-Associated Protein that Regulates Microtubule Dynamics in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Microtubules are polymers composed of alpha-beta tubulin heterodimers that assemble into microtubules. Microtubules are dynamic structures that have periods of both growth and shrinkage by addition and removal of subunits from the polymer. Microtubules stochastically switch between periods of growth and shrinkage, termed dynamic instability. Dynamic instability is coupled to the GTPase activity...
متن کاملMathematical Modeling of Dynamic Instability in Microtubules
Microtubules are biological polymers that have many functions in cells, such as support and structure in the cytoskeleton, providing avenues and mechanisms for intracellular transportation, and separating chromatids during cell division. Microtubule dynamic instability is an integral part of cell functioning, enabling microtubules to rapidly find and change spatial arrangements and interact wit...
